About Allison Grant

 

Director & Choreographer

 

Canadian theatre and opera director, teacher, choreographer and actor, Allison Grant performed at the Stratford Festival, at the Old Vic in London, and in tours and productions across Canada, the United States and England. She has become increasingly in demand as a director and choreographer of opera in Canada and the United States.

Recent directing work includes the National Arts Centre semi-staged production of Le nozze di Figaro with the NAC Orchestra and Conductor Alexander Shelley for their 50th Anniversary Season, as well as direction and choreography for Anchorage Opera’s HMS Pinafore and Carmen at Western University.

In past seasons she has directed The Auction (world premiere: Westben Festival), Die Zauberflöte (Sarasota Opera), FalstaffDon Giovanni and Carmen (Hamilton Opera), Così fan tutte, Roméo et Juliette (Vancouver Opera), L’Italiana in Algeri (L’Opéra de Montréal) and A Meeting of Minds (Canadian Stage, Toronto). As a choreographer, her work has been seen in Pirates of Penzance (Vancouver Opera) and The Merry Widow for opera companies in Hawaii, Edmonton and Hamilton, Die Fledermaus, Un Ballo in Maschera and Eugene Onegin (Vancouver Opera, Kentucky Opera) as well as The Queen of Spades, Dido and Aeneas, Don Giovanni and Eugene Onegin for The Canadian Opera Company.

She has directed or choreographed revival productions at the Canadian Opera Company, including Semele, which toured to The Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2015. She has enjoyed assisting or choreographing international productions with inspiring directors; Neil Armfield, Kelly Robinson, Ken Cazan, both Christopher and David Alden, Tim Albery and Joan Font. 

As Artistic Director of Theatre Athena, Allison directed plays and musicals including Master Class, Private Lives and the Canadian premiere of Itamar Moses’ brilliantly funny play, Bach at Leipzig.

In 2019, Allison assisted on James Robinson's production of Elektra. She will continue her collaboration with the Canadian Opera Company in 2019/20 by assistant directing Il Barbieri di Siviglia with director Joan Font.
